The RTS You Didn’t Know You Were Waiting For, Rymdkapsel by Grapefrukt Games

rymdkapsel bannerFinally the RTS mobile deserves.

A game truly well designed for mobile is above all, lite.  Rymdkapsel floats.  Martin Jonasson who is Grapefrukt Games  has created the perfect mobile RTS by stripping away the traditional RTS to the core and distilling it to its finest essence.

Jonasson’s streamlined minimalist approach is so beautiful that with the help of Niklas Ström’s ambient music the gameplay feels meditative more than defensive, even though you are regularly attacked.  You must simultaneously balance gathering or refining resources, expansion, and defense.  In addition there are four monoliths that can be researched, each providing a productivity bonus of some kind.

Another ideal for mobile feature is that you can pause at any time and leave the game, come back and immediately start playing from your pause.  Each attempt at the missions is around 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, (longer if you’re a better player) but being able to pause and step away easily meant for me being able to play in 30 second to a 1 minute sessions which added up between longer sit-down sessions.  Rymdkapsel might look innocent but its devoured my free time this last week.

Rymdkapsel is a complete title and worth picking up, but with only 3 missions and a few achievements I got 100% pretty quick and I’m left wanting much more.  I hope updates to this game include more mission options, and more difficult achievements.
